Discrete-Event Simulation in Healthcare Settings: A Review

We review and define the current state of art as relating to discrete event simulation in healthcare-related systems. A published literature over past five years (2017–2021) was conducted, building upon previously work. PubMed EBSCOhost were searched for journal articles on healthcare resulting identification 933 unique articles. Of these about half excluded at title/abstract level 154 full text level, leaving 311 papers analyze. These categorized, then analyzed by category collectively identify publication volume time, disease focus, activity levels country, software systems used, sizes unit under study. total 1196 initially identified. This list narrowed down systematic review. Following schema from prior reviews, fell into four broad categories: health care operations (HCSO), progression modeling (DPM), screening (SM), behavior (HBM). found that has continued increase year-over-year, well expand diverse areas system. In addition, this study adds extra bibliometric dimensions gain more insight details nuances how where is being used healthcare.
